Parkinson’s UK
People with Parkinson’s don’t have enough of the chemical dopamine because some of the nerve cells in their brain have died. Without it people can find that their movements become slower so it takes longer to do things. This can make everyday activities, such as eating, getting dressed, or using a phone or computer, difficult or frustrating.
As well as the symptoms that affect movement, people with Parkinson’s can find that other issues, such as tiredness, pain, depression and constipation, can have an impact on their day-to-day lives.
Every hour, someone in the UK is told they have Parkinson’s. One in 20 is under the age of 40. Because we’re here, no one has to face Parkinson’s alone.
We bring people with Parkinson’s, their carers and families together via our network of local groups, our website and free confidential helpline. Specialist nurses, our supporters and staff provide information and training on every aspect of Parkinson’s.
As the UK’s Parkinson’s support and research charity we’re leading the work to find a cure, and we’re closer than ever. We also campaign to change attitudes and demand better services.
Our work is totally dependent on donations. Help us to find a cure and improve life for everyone affected by Parkinson’s.
The website for the Parkinson’s UK is parkinsons.org.uk and the Registered Charity number is 258197.
Their help line is 0808 800 0303.
The Bracknell & District Branch
The Bracknell & District Branch is one of over 300 local branches and support groups across the UK. We are run by volunteers, often people who have Parkinson’s, their carers, families and friends, and are supported by Parkinson’s UK staff. We have recently celebrated 30 years since our branch was founded.
Our branch meets regularly. We have a range of activities on offer and very much hope that you will find something of interest for you or your carers. They provide an opportunity for people to meet up, chat, and share experiences and advice.
We have close links with our local NHS Parkinson’s Nurses and our Parkinson’s Local Advisor – please see our Support for You pages for more information.
Our branch has a programme of activities, meetings and social events. These include:
-
Providing information
-
Holding talks – often from specialists in Parkinson’s
-
Activities (e.g. singing group)
-
Group Classes (such as physiotherapy and hydrotherapy
- Personal services (such as chiropody, massage and reflexology)
-
Outings.
You can choose how much you wish to get involved. We have a small committee that organises our activities and leads our fundraising efforts. We listen very carefully to our local members and the activities we offer are based on feedback and requests from them. Please contact us if you have any questions.
Parkinson’s UK branches can be a huge source of support – and fun! The Bracknell and District Branch would very much welcome you and be keen to support you.
Your Committee
The Bracknell and District Branch is run entirely by volunteers. Any member of the branch may stand for election to the committee at our Annual General Meeting which is normally held in February.
