Fundraising at Windlesham Village Fete

Bracknell & District Parkinson’s Branch recently enjoyed a successful day’s fundraising and raising awareness of the Branch and its activities.

The splendid sum of £300 was raised at the Windlesham Village Fete by holding a bric-a-brac stall which included craft items made by people with Parkinson’s or their carers, ranging from pottery, cards, knitted items, cushions and some jewellery.  Generous donations were also given and so a final total of £300 was achieved.

In addition to the fundraising, the event raised awareness of the Bracknell & District Branch and the services it provides.

Special thanks must go to Wendy for all the preparation, setting up, and packing away that she did and also to the other members, including her grandson, who kindly volunteered their services on the day!

Bracknell Branch celebrates World Parkinson’s Day

Bracknell Branch celebrates World Parkinson’s Day

Thursday 11th April was World Parkinson’s Day (WPD) and the Branch marked the day with a Potter for Parkinson’s event around South Hill Park, Bracknell. The theme for WPD was Make it Blue and so members, families, friends, and even pets!, were invited to wear blue and meet for a gentle stroll around the venue’s two lakes followed, of course, by some welcome refreshments in the café.

The event was organised by Branch Physiotherapist Beccy Oliver who set the participants a challenge of reaching 50,000 steps which was smashed with a total of 121,000 being achieved!

The walk was a great success with 65 attendees turning up to enjoy each other’s company and the exercise around the lakes, and so thanks go to Beccy for pulling off such a successful event.

Fantastic Fundraising News

Fantastic Fundraising News

The Branch had some great fundraising news recently when it received two wonderful grants of £5,000 each. The first was a £5,000 grant from Berkshire Community Foundation and the second was a donation of £5,000 from local company FDD International Ltd.

Nathan Love, Branch Chair, commented, “We are extremely grateful to the Berkshire Community Foundation and FDD for these grants which will help us to continue to provide a range of services for our members. Research by Parkinson’s UK shows that the two best ways of treating the symptoms of Parkinson’s are through exercise and medication and so the continuing provision of these activities and services will be of great benefit to our members.”

Further to the recent Branch AGM, we are pleased to announce that Nathan Love has been appointed Branch Chair. Nathan has been a member of the Branch for a couple of years and is the youngest Chair the Branch has ever had. Nathan was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2021 and works full-time in the environmental services sector.

Nathan will undergo an induction for new Chairs with Parkinson’s UK and also meet with the Committee to get up to speed with things before then settling into his role.

He is looking forward to his time as Chair and to meeting Branch members and we wish him every success in the role.

Merry Xmas Everybody!

Merry Xmas Everybody!

Bracknell & District Parkinson’s Branch recently enjoyed a lively start to their Christmas festivities when they held their annual Christmas party. The meeting got off to an energetic start with a selection of carols and festive favourites led by Bimbi from Berkshire Maestros and who runs the Branch’s fortnightly Singing Cafe.

This musical interlude was followed by an enjoyable Christmas themed quiz provided by Committee members Pat and Keith.

There were also refreshments and mince pies served during the evening which were provided by Wendy and her team of helpers. The evening concluded with a raffle comprising 10 great prizes and which raised over £250 for the Branch. The event was very popular with over 50 members and their partners attending, making it the largest attendance the Branch had had for a meeting.
